Dearest Grandpa,
I hope you are doing well! Thank you so much for the letter you wrote me-it was both beautiful and moving. You have an incredible command of the English language that I can only hope to learn someday. I hope I find you in good spirits, and I just wanted to let you know what has been happening lately over here in Ohio.
First semester is over now, and I am so close to graduating! My classes are getting harder, as the IB Exams are approaching, but now the pressure is off. I have just completed one of the biggest assignments of my high school career- called the Extended Essay- and I would love it if you would read it and give me your feedback. I have attached a rough draft of the essay, and I hope you don’t find it too long and boring. It is about the life and mystery of William Shakespeare- a topic I have found fascinating for my entire life. Knowing how much you enjoy literature yourself, I thought you might like to read it in your spare time, though it is a bit dry.
I wish you could be here for my graduation, because I know I will be thinking of you as I walk across the stage and get my High School Diploma. Hopefully I can come visit you soon- I miss you a lot and hope to see China again. I hear that China has made impressive strides both economically and socially since I was last there, and I am positive that Mom and Dad would love for me to reconnect with my heritage before I embark on my college adventure. Most of all, however, I want to see you again! I miss talking to you and hearing all your thrilling stories. Your letter reminded me of fascinating your life has been, and how fortunate I am to have you as my Grandfather. Please write to me again, I always cherish the letters you have given me as prized possessions. They are beautiful pieces that allow me to connect with you.
So far, Mom and Dad have been in good health and spirits- I think they feel that there is less pressure now that I got into Princeton. Dinah and Daniel are also doing very well in their studies and instruments, and they miss you very very much.
I will call you this weekend Grandpa. Until then, I hope you have a lovely time in China!
Love, your granddaughter,
PS- In English class, we are reading of my favorite pieces of writing- the Letter from Birmingham Jail by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. If you would like to read it, just let me know. I would love to send you a copy. It is one of the most inspiring written works I have ever read, and I know you would appreciate the heartfelt, exquisite wording.
